Life Gets Under Our Skin

About our partners
The ESRC International Centre for Lifecourse Studies is based at University College London. The centre collects social and biometric data ‘right across life’ to gain a better understanding of the long term influences on health and wellbeing. Using information from longitudinal studies like the British Birth Cohort Studies, they combine data about people’s circumstances with what’s happening inside them, to look at how all that affects health over the course of life.
The challenge
The film needed to show why the research evidence that comes from this type of science is so important. This short explainer video answers the questions; how does class, education and work affect our health and quality of life? And, if we could identify the ‘pinch points’ within people’s lives, how can we reduce the strain? In this film we use whiteboard animation to take a look at how life gets under our skin, to try to find ways to help people live happy healthy lives.
The film
In this fascinating film for ICLS, we uncover how longitudinal data can be used to paint a clear and nuanced picture of how 'life gets under our skin’, how it affects what goes on inside us, and the potential that has for improving people’s lives.
The context
In our explainer video, we highlighted the quality of EuroQol’s translation technique and the fact that many translated versions of the EQ-5D already exist.
Good reporting systems are the standard across most industries today, however in the NHS, their reporting still has room for improvement. The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) wanted to create a film that raised awareness about the global importance of their research into musculoskeletal health and presented donors with a truly unique opportunity to make a lifetime legacy impact.
Aimed at healthcare managers and clinicians involved in local-level incident investigation, Loughborough University wanted to share an alternative method of healthcare investigation, Systems Thinking. The explainer video introduced the concept of systems thinking, stimulated their overall thinking and provided guidance on this alternative investigation method.
While CPR can save lives, it isn’t always the best course of action. That’s why the University of Essex asked us to create a series of films that explain key details and issues linked to CPR and DNACPR.
For over 50 years the American Society of Nephrology has been bringing together Nephrologists in the fight to prevent, treat and cure kidney diseases! We created this film to celebrate the inspirational figures who sparked and nurtured a passion for Nephrology.

We were delighted to partner with the Lasker Foundation to create a series of four whiteboard animations.
We collaborated with the British Council to create a whiteboard animation showcasing BIRAX projects and achievements.
We worked with the the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, creating a whiteboard animation to raise awareness about TXA and the success of the CRASH trials.
EQ-5D has been used for over 30 years in clinical trials, population studies and real-world settings, informing important decisions by healthcare authorities and providers.
For over 30 years EQ-5D has been used to measure people’s quality of life. It covers essential areas of our lives including mobility, selfcare and depression, providing vital insights into medical trials and the ways medical conditions affect people.
We worked with Pfizer to create a series of illustrations presenting various aspects of the digital health story, primed for print and online usage.
Working with Hill Holliday and Janssen Pharmaceuticals we had to bring the serious and detailed subjects of CAD and PAD to life through whiteboard animation.
How does life get ‘under your skin’? We explained the importance of the International Centre for Lifecourse Studies’ research in this whiteboard animation.
Want to protect yourself and others from air pollution? This whiteboard animation explains more.
Because much of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement’s work is in war zones and areas of extreme danger, it is vital that their staff and volunteers are aware of how to stay safe. We explained more in this whiteboard animation.
