Skinflint are dedicated to salvaging, restoring and refurbishing vintage lighting - creating lights true to their original character that operate at today’s highest standards. They have introduced Full Circle buy-back scheme, an initiative which supports sustainability and the circular economy. Our whiteboard animation raised awareness about this, and the restorative work Skinflint do.
The Scrapbook
The challenge
When creating this animation, it was important that we informed viewers about Skinflint’s work and their Full Circle buy-back scheme in a conversational and relaxed tone which avoided a heavy focus on sales. Using the whiteboard style and Skinflint’s brand guidelines, our animation had to achieve this tone while featuring key points such as their methodology, the circular economy, environmental benefits and financial benefits - guiding viewers to three clear calls to action.
The film
We took a realistic approach when making this animation, using illustration to capture the exquisite detail of Skinflint’s work. This illustration was underpinned by a strong script, which delivered their history, process, ethos, products and introduced the Full Circle buy-back scheme. The clarity and precision of this illustration can be seen in examples such as the deconstructed lighting fixture. A conversational voiceover and characters drawn with charm created a warm and approachable tone within the animation. The messages surrounding the circular economy and the Full Circle buy-back scheme were a key part of this film and we used whiteboard animation’s clarity to emphasize them. We first explained product circularity and then used a combination of recognisable icons and symbols to highlight the problems of the ‘make, take, use, loose’ model. Building on these explanations, we were able to introduce the Full Circle buy-back scheme, before panning out and delivering the film’s calls to action.
About the client
Launched in 2009 and based in Cornwall, Skinflint salvage lighting from across the UK and Europe. They restore this lighting in a way which honours it’s original design and history. The result achieved by Skinflint is that every light is fully restored to both it’s original form and modern standards, with the addition of character created by each each light’s individual history. This process underlines of Skinflint’s core values of restoration and sustainability.
